About Ben More Coigach [Beinn Mhor na Coigich]

Rising steeply from the shores of Loch Broom, this impressive Graham is defined by its long, serrated ridge and dramatic coastal position. The terrain is rugged, transitioning from heathery slopes to airy sandstone crests that offer an immense sense of scale, looking across to the Summer Isles and the shark-fin peaks of Assynt.

Did You Know?

  • The name translates from Gaelic as the 'Big Mountain of Coigach'. The peninsula name 'Coigach' likely refers to 'fifths' (còigeamh), suggesting the area was historically divided into five tax-paying land portions or 'davochs'.
  • While the summit is a fine destination, many walkers combine it with a visit to the adjacent Sgùrr an Fhidhleir, known for its spectacular 300-metre vertical precipice that drops straight toward Lochan Tuath.
  • Much of the mountain forms part of the Ben Mor Coigach Wildlife Reserve, the largest managed by the Scottish Wildlife Trust, where efforts focus on restoring native woodland and protecting the rare post-glacial flora found on the high sandstone terraces.
  • The summit offers one of the finest perspectives on the Summer Isles archipelago to the west, while to the north, the isolated 'island' peaks of Assynt—including Stac Pollaidh and Suilven—appear in sharp silhouette against the Minch.
  • Despite its classification as a Graham, the steep 740-metre pull directly from the kelp-strewn shores of Loch Broom quickly dispels any notion that this is a 'small' hill.
